I watched a video on youtube showing the process of design of a product at MYOB.
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=tiEx7kDs-dM&feature=related
They break the process down into six steps:
1)Defining the problem.
Visit the business and observe potential users, noting any problems they may encounter while carrying out their tasks. Note the conditions that the design will be used in.
2)Task analysis and scope definition.
List the needs of the user, as defined by step 1. Brainstorm and list ideas
3)Usability test initial design.
Paper prototype of user interface given to users with a task list to complete. User is observed carrying out the tasks and potential problems are noted.
4)High level and visual design.
The look of the interface is designed based on previous steps.
5)Usability testing refined design.
Repeat usability testing on the refined prototype,
6)Functional specifications.
Draw up the functional specifications for the product.
The Four D's
This process is similar to to concept of the 'four D's' of design:
Decide
Define
Design
Deliver
with the addition of usability testing.
